Fans of The Walking Dead and Legend of Korra rejoice: Steven Yeun, known to fans of the AMC horror show as Glenn, will be joining the voice cast of the Nickelodeon animated series as Wan, the very first Avatar in existence. Yeun’s character will appear in two episodes titled “Beginnings 1 & 2″ during the second season — aka Book 2: Spirits — debuting later this year.

The sequel to the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra debuted last April to 4.5 million viewers, and quickly became the highest-rated show on Nickelodeon. Both series are set in a fictional world where people called “benders” have special abilities that allow them to control one of the four elements (water, earth, air, and fire), but only one person — the Avatar — can control all four and bring balance to the world.

Wan’s story will take place ten thousand years before Korra’s time, and follow the teenage explorer and skilled bender as he tries to bring balance between mankind and the spirits, a quest that ultimately leads to becoming the first Avatar.

Legend of Korra co-creator and executive producer Bryan Konietzko told Wired that they cast Yeun in part because of the versatility of his voice acting, and how it aligns with the narrative journey of Wan throughout those two episodes.

“Steve’s vocal quality and acting can range from an innocent, naïve young man, to a trickster anti-hero, and all the way to a full-fledged action hero,” said Konietzko. ”And in each take, he made Wan really human and relatable, despite the mythic setting of his tale.”

While Avatar: The Last Airbender established a long tradition of Avatars that stretched indefinitely into history, this will be our first look at the first person to take on (or create) the mantle of the Avatar, a reincarnated role that passes to one person in each generation to serve as the human incarnation of the planet.

These episodes will also mark a significant stylistic departure from the usual aesthetics of Legend of Korra. ”To depict the world in Wan’s time, the creative team drew inspiration from ancient and traditional East Asian ink wash paintings and woodblock prints for the environments, color palettes, and stylizations of the elements,” said a Nickelodeon representative. “The results expand the vision of the Avatar world, but also stay very true to the building blocks of its visual influence.”

More details will be announced at the Legend of Korra panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, which is slated for 11:15 am tomorrow morning in Ballroom 20. Check out the Wired liveblog for up-to-the-minute details on the event, which opened today to the general public. Read it fullmetalavatar.tumblr.com/pos…

He was a non-bender...but from the fire lion turtle he was allowed to bend fire.  I think the next Avatar would be from the air people.

I would expect the first avatar to be an earthbender or airbender.

They haven't changed the continuity. Just the setting, now instead of a mostly agrairian world it's a post industrial, steampunkish society.

HELL YEAH! can't wait for the panel to start, you peeps over there in the us are so lucky it's in the morning so you literally don't have to wait all day for all the news - it's 6 p.m. here, now, and still 2 hours to go. I might go crazy in the meantime, especially now that I know there's going to be the premiere of the 1st ep and all that other Korra goodness! @.@

Oh, and as to stay on-topic, for a change: is it just me or does Wan look an awful lot like a nicer, younger version of Ozai?!

This is so exciting! It's also going to be good to return to the classic "bender" world. Where can they really go after Korra? To a world of technology where archaic bending is still practiced? I loved the classic Asian feel of TLA and this will be super cool to be a beginning to it all!

I just sculpted the first avatar. Also I have been waiting for the time that they would tell the story of the first avatar. I wonder what bending he does. The color of his clothes remind me of airbender clothes. Maybe he acquires a little bit of each? But earth bending came later supposedly (the cave of two lovers). So there is a good chance of air.

I always thought the first was an air bender cuz they're the most spiritual of the four :/

Who knows, maybe the avatar precedes the division between the four nations.

He might not even be a bender at first.

I Wonder if they're going to talk about Energybending, since it's supposed to be what was used before people started bending the elements.

True. I am thinking the same thing (makes sense since in order to get to the spirit world one must be spiritual) as well as the fact that the picture shows part of his shirt which reminds me of the colors found on airbenders' clothes. (slightly darker.)

Aw, man. My personal headcanon always assumed the Avatar predated element-bending and did spirit-bending instead. I also thought they were originally a spirit that agreed to be reeincarnated in order to understand human life and bring balance , not a human that gets bestowed with Phenomenal Cosmic Powers. Bummer.

I don't see how since the avatar is defined by the ability to bend all the elements. Not to mention, spirit bending used to be something all benders did long, long ago.

Well, I'd thought maybe element-bending was created by the Avatar, which is why they're the only being capable of bending all elements. Others like the moon spirits only bend one, like water. So maybe separating the elements created 'balance', and bringing balance is the sole job of the Avatar.

The only reason it disappoints me is that it means the Avatar had their capabilities bestowed on them by something like an Earth Spirit, rather than being that spirit.

Doesn't matter, though, I'm sure I'll still enjoy watching the show. I only feel like they took the easy way by picking a 'relatable' human character as the origin story rather than something more mythical.

It was already explained what spurred the different bending abilities: dragons for fire, moon for water, badger moles for earth, and flying bison for air. Those are the creatures that taught human benders elemental bending. The Avatar played know role in that.

Meh.

I expecting nothing else, tbh. *shrug*

Yeah, my origin story was always influenced by something I've read on an ATLA wiki that said 'The Avatar is the incarnation of the Spirit of the Planet in human form.'
So I pictured way back in the dawn of time, when all humans (also 'spirits' themselves) could spirit-bend, and spirits roamed freely in the world. Then there was a war between the reincarnating, changeable human spirits and the rigid, specialized spirits (knowledge, nature, etc) and the spirit of the Earth agreed to be a bridge between these warring factions, and separated energy into four parts, element bending, and the spirit world withdrew to another plane. The literal 'avatar' or incarnation of the earth spirit reincarnates into many different walks of life and both genders in order to fully grasp humanity and why it's worth protecting, but also keeps the their respect of and relationship to the Spirit World in check.

Now instead it's a bender kid who happened to be so unique and special that all of these other powerful beings said 'whoops heheh boy you're right, fighting's bad, let's have you be the spirit magic bridge we'll all just forget our differences now. Plus, Big Mama Planet Spirit gave you powers'n'stuff. Yeah.'

At least I have Bolin.
